The best time to move in Houston is weekday mornings (8–10am start) in September, October, or November — cooler weather, lower demand, easier traffic. Avoid August (90°F+ with humidity), summer lease-end weekends (peak demand), and Friday afternoons (I-10 gridlock). Flat-rate movers like KAK charge the same price any day, but hourly movers often surge-price on peak weekends.

§01 TL;DR

Best and worst times, in one chart.

Houston move timing at a glance

  • Best month: October (cool, low demand, low rainfall)
  • Good months: September, November, February, March
  • Avoid: August (heat), late May–June (peak lease-end + student moves)
  • Best day: Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday
  • Avoid: Last Saturday of any month (peak lease-end weekend)
  • Best hour to start: 8–10am (beat heat, beat traffic)
  • Avoid starting at: 4pm+ (you’ll hit I-10 / 610 rush hour)
§02 By Month

Houston’s moving calendar.

January — good (if it’s not raining)

Low demand, cool weather (50s–60s typical). Watch for the occasional cold snap or heavy rain day. Prices steady (flat-rate is flat regardless, hourly is at bottom of range).

February — great

Mild weather, low demand, minimal rain. One of the best moving months in Houston.

March — great

Warming up (70s typical), still low demand. Allergy season can be rough, but the move itself is easy.

April — very good

Temperate, pre-summer-rush. Occasional thunderstorms. Good month.

May — OK, trending to busy

Student move season ramps up (UH, Rice, HCC graduations). Lease-end traffic rises. Heat reaches 85°F+ by late month.

June — busy and hot

Peak lease-end demand. Students moving. New-job young-pros relocating. Hourly movers surge-price weekends. Heat 90°F+ consistently.

July — busy and hotter

Similar to June but hotter. Thunderstorms can cancel outdoor operations temporarily. Book 4+ weeks ahead for popular weekends.

August — avoid if possible

Worst month. 95°F+ highs, humidity 70%+, heat index regularly >100°F. Physical labor is brutal. Book the earliest morning slot (7am start) if you must.

September — back to great

Heat breaks mid-to-late month. Lease-end demand calms. Beautiful moving weather by end of month.

October — the best month

Cool, dry, low demand. Houston’s best overall moving month. If you have scheduling flexibility, move in October.

November — great

Cool, dry, good demand. Thanksgiving week can be tight for student moves but otherwise easy.

December — OK (avoid around holidays)

Cool weather, but holiday travel and end-of-year student moves compete for schedule slots. Week before Christmas is busy.

§03 By Day of Week

Weekday vs weekend.

Monday — slightly busy

Everyone who couldn’t book a weekend slot bumps to Monday. Decent availability but not the quietest day.

Tuesday — best weekday

Lowest demand. Fastest crew availability. Best for same-day bookings.

Wednesday — also great

Similar to Tuesday. Light traffic, light demand.

Thursday — good

Slightly busier as people set up for weekends, but still solid.

Friday — avoid afternoons

Morning Friday is OK. Friday afternoon is the worst Houston traffic day of the week. I-10, 610, 59, 290 all snarl 3–7pm.

Saturday — busy but doable

Most common moving day. Book 2–4 weeks out. Hourly movers surge-price. Flat-rate doesn’t change.

Sunday — busy, smaller crews

Lease-end overflow. Some companies don’t work Sundays at all. Book early or go weekday instead.

§04 By Hour

When in the day to start.

7–9am start — best

Coolest part of summer days (especially August). Crew is freshest. Light traffic. Reach the new apartment well before any afternoon rush. For summer moves, always pick this slot.

10am–12pm start — fine

Standard slot. Traffic cleared from morning rush. Still time to finish before evening chaos. Best slot for non-summer months.

1–3pm start — OK

Works for 2-BR moves that take 3–5 hours. You’ll finish around 6–8pm, past the worst traffic. Avoid in summer — you’re loading in the hottest hours.

4pm+ start — avoid

You’ll hit rush hour on the drive between apartments. For a 1-BR that should take 3 hours, you now take 4+ because the truck sat in traffic. You’ll also be unloading in the dark if the move runs long.

§05 Seasonal Demand

Why when matters for pricing.

KAK’s flat-rate is the same regardless of day or season — $399 1-BR whether you move Tuesday in October or Saturday in July. But the broader Houston moving market follows demand-based pricing:

  • Peak: last weekend of May through first weekend of September. Student move-ins and lease-end surge. Hourly movers often add 15–25% surge pricing. Availability gets tight.
  • Mid-peak: every last weekend of the month. Lease-end concentration. Book 2+ weeks out.
  • Off-peak: mid-weeks in October–April. Maximum availability, quickest scheduling, easiest same-day bookings.

If budget is tight

  • Move mid-week, mid-month, mid-fall (Oct–Nov).
  • If you can time your new-lease start to the 10th–15th of the month, you dodge lease-end surge completely.
  • Flat-rate movers don’t surge anyway — but hourly + U-Haul pricing drops significantly off-peak.
§06 Weather Strategy

Houston weather is its own challenge.

Heat (June–September)

Book the earliest morning slot. Stock cold water for the crew (huge help). Keep AC running at both apartments during the move. Don’t plan anything demanding for the evening — you’ll be exhausted.

Thunderstorms (May–September)

Houston afternoon thunderstorms are sudden and intense. A 30-minute storm can delay a move. Check hourly forecasts move-day morning. Have tarps ready. KAK reschedules free if weather is genuinely unsafe.

Hurricanes / tropical systems

Hurricane season runs June–November, peak August–October. If a named storm is projected within 48 hours of your move, reschedule. No mover should work through a hurricane.

Winter cold snaps (January–February)

Rare but real. 2021 and 2023 had multi-day freezes. Check forecast if moving in deep winter. 40°F rain is brutal for a long move.

§07 Special Cases

Timing for specific situations.

Student moves (UH, Rice, HCC, TSU)

Fall move-in: mid-August to early September is the peak. Book 6+ weeks ahead. Spring move-out: late April through early May. Summer storage pickups: June. See Rice Village movers for campus-adjacent specifics.

Same-day moves

Call before noon for best same-day availability. Tuesday–Thursday most reliable. Weekend same-day slots fill by 10am. See same-day apartment movers.

Corporate relocations

Start date usually a Monday. Schedule the move for the preceding Friday or Saturday. Flat-rate works, but young-professional high-rise moves may need weekday for building access.

Tight lease-end windows

See our lease-end moving guide. Book the last day of the month as early morning as possible. Have your cleaning plan ready.

§09 FAQ

Frequently asked.

What’s the best month to move in Houston?
October. Cool weather (70s typical), low humidity, low demand, low rainfall. September and November are close seconds. February and March also strong off-peak choices.
What’s the worst month to move in Houston?
August. 95°F+ highs, 70%+ humidity, heat index regularly over 100°F. Physical labor is brutal. If you must move in August, book the earliest morning slot (7am) and stock cold water.
Is it cheaper to move on a weekday in Houston?
With flat-rate movers like KAK, no — same price any day. With hourly movers and rental truck companies like U-Haul, yes — typically 10–25% cheaper weekday vs weekend, especially vs last-weekend-of-the-month surge pricing.
What time should movers start in Houston?
8–10am is ideal year-round. In summer (June–September), push it to 7–8am to beat heat. Avoid starting after 3pm — you’ll hit Friday afternoon traffic or miss closing hours for leasing offices.
How far in advance should I book?
Off-peak: 1–2 weeks ahead. Peak (May–Aug lease-end weekends): 4+ weeks. Same-day: possible with KAK, best if you call before noon for next-slot availability.
Should I avoid moving on the 1st of the month?
If possible, yes. Everyone’s moving the last Saturday / first day of the month. Lease-turnover gridlock, parking chaos, packed apartment complex driveways. Mid-month moves are dramatically easier.
Does hurricane season affect Houston moves?
Yes — hurricane season is June–November, with the peak being August–October. Check the National Hurricane Center 7 days out from any summer move. If a named storm is projected within 48 hours, reschedule. Most reputable movers reschedule free for legitimate weather threats.
