How much does an apartment move cost in Houston?
Straight answer, no fluff: studios run $299 flat-rate, 1-BR around $399, 2-BR around $549 with honest movers. Hourly crews can push the same move to $400–$900 once fees stack. Here’s how the math actually works.
2026 Houston pricingThe average cost to move an apartment in Houston ranges from $299 for a studio to $549 for a 2-bedroom with flat-rate movers, or $400–$900 with hourly movers after fees. Most 1-bedroom moves inside the 610 Loop are done in 3–4 hours for a flat $399.
The TL;DR for renters who don’t want to scroll.

Why flat-rate almost always wins in Houston.
Houston is big. The 610 Loop alone is 38 miles around. Even a short apartment move — say, Heights to Montrose — involves 20+ minutes of driving on a normal Tuesday afternoon. In summer traffic, double that. This is where hourly pricing quietly explodes.
The hourly math most renters miss
A typical Houston hourly mover quote looks like this:
- $140/hour for a 3-person crew (the cheapest you’ll find — most are $150–$180)
- 2-hour minimum on all jobs (so $280 before they’ve picked up a single box)
- Travel fee: usually 1 hour of billable time added ($140) to cover “truck to your place and back”
- Fuel surcharge: $35–$75 flat, plus sometimes $0.65/mile over 15 miles
- Stair fee: $50–$150 for walk-ups past the 1st floor
- Materials: $10–$30 per wardrobe box, $15 per roll of shrink wrap, $5 per pad
- Long-carry fee: $75–$150 if the truck parks “too far” from the door
A real 1-BR Houston move, hourly
- Move: Heights walk-up → Montrose mid-rise · 6 miles · 1 flight up both ends
- 4 hours on-site @ $160/hr = $640
- 1 hour travel @ $160 = $160
- Fuel surcharge: $50
- Stair fee (both ends): $100
- Shrink wrap + pads: $45
- Total: $995 (pre-tip)
Same move with KAK: $399 flat. No travel fee. No stair fee. No materials fee. No surcharge. If it takes us 5 hours instead of 4, you still pay $399. If traffic on I-10 makes us late, you still pay $399.
What each apartment size actually costs.
What makes Houston different from a Dallas or Austin move.
Heat adds cost
A Houston summer move — especially August, when highs hit 95°F with 70% humidity — is physically harder. Hourly crews slow down in the heat. That extra hour or two is on your clock. Flat-rate crews just work through it. Our $399 is $399 whether it’s 72° in March or 97° in July.
Traffic matters more than miles
The I-10 corridor, 610 Loop, and 290 are notorious. A 12-mile move from Midtown to the Galleria can take 15 minutes at 10am or 50 minutes at 5pm. Hourly movers charge for every minute of that. Flat-rate: one price.
Walk-ups are everywhere
Heights, Montrose, Rice Village, parts of Midtown — a huge chunk of Houston’s rental stock is 2–3 story walk-ups with no elevator. Hourly movers tack on $50–$150 per flight of stairs. We don’t. Stairs are included in every flat rate we quote.
High-rise buildings have rules
Downtown, Uptown, Midtown high-rises require elevator reservations, COI (certificate of insurance) filings, and specific move-in windows. Some charge move-in fees ($200–$500) that go to the building, not us. Factor that into your budget separately.
Five line items that turn a $400 quote into $900.
- 1. Travel time from warehouse to your pickup. Many hourly companies bill you for the drive from their yard to your door. That’s 30–60 minutes of billed time before they’ve touched a box.
- 2. “Double drive time.” Some charge both directions: warehouse-to-you AND you-back-to-warehouse. A 30-minute drive becomes 60 minutes billed.
- 3. Packing materials. Shrink wrap, tape, wardrobe boxes, mattress bags — $50–$200 add-on billed per piece. Flat-rate crews include these.
- 4. Stair / walk-up surcharge. Classic $100+ hit for Heights and Montrose apartments. No way around it with hourly.
- 5. “Heavy item” surcharge. Pianos, safes, treadmills — hourly movers charge $100–$300 extra. If you have one, disclose it upfront for any quote.
What “no hidden fees” actually means at KAK
- No travel fee. No fuel surcharge.
- No stair fee, no walk-up fee, no long-carry fee.
- No materials fee. Blankets, padding, shrink wrap, dollies — included.
- No “heavy item” fee for standard apartment furniture.
- No weekend surcharge. Saturday costs the same as Tuesday.
- No same-day rush fee. Quote today = same price as quote next week.
What you should budget beyond the move itself.
- Tip for the crew: $20–$40 per mover is standard for good service. For a 3-person crew, budget $60–$120 in cash. Optional but appreciated. See our Houston tipping guide.
- Water / snacks: Cold waters and maybe pizza at the end. Costs $20. Makes a bigger difference than you’d think.
- Parking permits: Some Downtown and Montrose streets need a temporary no-parking permit ($15–$30) for the truck. Usually not needed, but ask your building.
- High-rise move-in fees: $200–$500 charged by the building, not us. Ask your property manager.
- Cleaning deposit: If your old place needs a professional clean for deposit recovery, budget $150–$300 for a cleaner.
- First-night essentials box: Toilet paper, soap, a phone charger, a towel, sheets, a pillow. Costs $40–$60 at Target. Saves your life day 1.
Realistic Houston 1-BR move budget: $399 move + $90 tip + $30 waters/snacks = $519 all-in. Same move with hourly movers and fees: $700–$1,000+. That’s why we built the business.
Six ways to lower your move cost without cutting corners.
- 1. Book flat-rate, not hourly. By far the biggest lever. See our flat-rate tiers here.
- 2. Pack yourself. Saves $200–$600 vs paying for packing service. We can still do the heavy lifting.
- 3. Purge before you pack. Every pound less is less to move. Donate or sell on Facebook Marketplace before move week.
- 4. Move mid-month, mid-week. Lease-end weekends (last Friday / last Saturday of the month) are busiest. Tuesday the 14th is cheaper everywhere. (Our flat-rate is the same any day, but hourly movers sometimes surge.)
- 5. Avoid August. Peak heat, peak demand. See our best time to move in Houston guide.
- 6. Use a student discount if eligible. UH, Rice, HCC, TSU — 10% off at KAK with a valid ID.
