A successful Houston apartment move starts 6–8 weeks before lease-end: book movers 4 weeks out, switch utilities 2 weeks out, finalize packing 1 week out, and handle parking permits, lease-turnover cleaning, and truck coordination on move day. Same-day moves are possible with KAK but the full timeline prevents most last-minute surprises.

§01 Quick Overview

The whole timeline, in one glance.

Houston apartment move timeline

  • 8 weeks out: Sign new lease. Give notice on current. Start purge.
  • 6 weeks out: Request time off. Get quotes from movers.
  • 4 weeks out: Book movers (lock in the date). Order boxes.
  • 2 weeks out: Schedule utility transfers. Update address.
  • 1 week out: Pack everything except essentials. Confirm movers.
  • Day before: Defrost fridge. Disassemble beds. Pack essentials bag.
  • Move day: Crew arrives. You supervise, don’t lift. Final walkthrough.
  • Week after: Unpack essentials. File change-of-address. Tip, review, done.

Don’t have 8 weeks? Most of this still works compressed. If your lease ends in 7 days, jump to the “1 week out” section and add our same-day movers to your contact list.

§02 8 Weeks Out

Lock in the foundation.

  • Sign the new lease. Confirm exact move-in date in writing. Houston landlords typically set turnover for the 1st of the month, but “first available” can be the 15th or 25th.
  • Give notice on your current place. Most Texas leases require 30 or 60 days written notice. Check yours — miss the window and you’ll owe another month.
  • Start the purge. Every closet, every drawer. Donate to Goodwill on Shepherd, sell on Facebook Marketplace, trash what no one wants. Every pound you don’t move is money and time saved.
  • Request time off work. At least half-day move-day, ideally full-day. If you have flexibility, book a weekday — Houston apartment complexes are calmer Monday–Thursday.
  • Take photos of your current apartment. Every room, every corner, every appliance, every floor. You’ll need these for deposit disputes later.
§03 6 Weeks Out

Shortlist movers. Don’t book yet.

  • Get 3–4 quotes. Mix flat-rate (KAK, similar companies) with hourly quotes for comparison. Our 60-second quote is here.
  • Verify TXDMV license. Every legit Texas mover has a TXDMV number. Check it at txdmv.gov/movers. No license = hard pass. See our scam avoidance guide.
  • Check reviews. Google and Yelp. Look for patterns in 1-star reviews — “raised the price on move day” is the #1 red flag.
  • Ask about flat-rate vs hourly. We break this down in detail in our flat-rate vs hourly guide.
§04 4 Weeks Out

Book the crew. Lock the date.

  • Book your movers. Flat-rate locks your price. Hourly companies will try to get a deposit — read the cancellation policy before paying.
  • Order boxes. Home Depot small + medium boxes run $1.50–$3 each. You’ll need 25–40 for a 1-BR. Or use KAK’s pack service — boxes included.
  • Start packing the “storage” rooms. Closets, pantry shelves you never touch, books, seasonal clothes. Label by room.
  • Arrange pet boarding or backup. Move day is not the day your cat meets new movers. Plan a friend’s place or day care.
  • Confirm parking at both ends. Ask both apartment offices what hours the truck can be at the curb. Some Montrose streets restrict commercial vehicles during business hours.
§05 2 Weeks Out

Utilities, address, and the last 30 boxes.

Utility transfers (Houston specifics)

  • Electricity: Houston is deregulated — you pick the retail provider. Options include Reliant, TXU, Direct Energy, Gexa, Green Mountain. Schedule start at new place and stop at old.
  • Water: City of Houston water — call 311 or go online. Usually transfers between addresses with one call.
  • Gas: CenterPoint Energy in most of Houston. Schedule 1–2 weeks ahead; a tech has to be present for connection.
  • Internet: Comcast/Xfinity, AT&T Fiber, or Verizon depending on your neighborhood. Order the install 2–3 weeks out — Houston has long install waits.
  • Trash: If you’re in a single-family rental outside a complex, verify city pickup transfers with your address change.

Change of address checklist

  • USPS: moversguide.usps.com — set up mail forwarding ($1.10 verification fee)
  • Texas DMV: update driver’s license address (online at txdmv.gov)
  • Voter registration: harrisvotes.com or mail-in form
  • Bank, credit cards, subscriptions, employer HR
  • Amazon, delivery apps (DoorDash, Instacart), ride-share
§06 1 Week Out

Pack everything except essentials.

  • Pack all non-essentials. Kitchen (except one mug, one plate, one set of utensils per person), living room, bedroom except bedding, office.
  • Confirm your movers. Text or call 48 hours before. Get the crew lead’s name and ETA window.
  • Empty the freezer. Eat or toss. Nothing survives a move without thawing.
  • Separate valuables and documents. Passport, birth certificate, lease, jewelry, medications — all in a bag that rides with you, not the truck.
  • Houston-specific: check the forecast. Summer thunderstorms can turn a 3-hour move into a 5-hour one. Have backup tarps if rain is likely.
§07 Day Before

The last 24 hours, done right.

  • Defrost the fridge. Mandatory. A wet fridge on a truck is a nightmare. Unplug 12–24 hours before.
  • Disassemble what you can. Bed frame, dining table. KAK handles this too, but pre-disassembly saves time. Keep hardware in labeled zip-top bags taped to the furniture.
  • Pack your essentials bag. Toilet paper, toothbrush, phone charger, one towel, one set of sheets, one day’s clothes, water bottle, snacks, paper plates, a trash bag.
  • Charge everything. Phone, laptop, earbuds, headphones. Move day will drain your battery fast.
  • Confirm the crew’s ETA. We text 30 min out.
  • Set out tip cash. $60–$120 for a 3-person crew. Easier to have ready than fumble for at 2pm.
§08 Move Day

Hour by hour, what actually happens.

  • Morning (7–9am): Final walk-through of your old place. Photos of every wall and the fridge/stove interior. Strip the bed, throw the last trash bag.
  • Crew arrives (8–10am for most slots): Brief walkthrough. Show them fragile items, tight turns, anything special.
  • Loading (1.5–2.5 hrs for 1-BR): Stay out of the way but available for questions. Don’t try to help carry — that’s what you’re paying for.
  • Drive time: You head to the new place separately. Be there before the crew.
  • Unloading (1.5–2 hrs for 1-BR): Direct the crew by room as they unload. “Bedroom box” vs “kitchen box” — labels help.
  • Reassembly: Bed frame, dining table, desk. KAK handles this as part of the flat rate.
  • Walkthrough & payment: Verify everything’s inside. Sign the bill of lading. Pay the flat rate. Tip the crew in cash.
  • Return to old place (if time): Final cleaning, return keys, drop off garage remote. Take timestamped photos of the empty unit.
§09 First Week After

You’re in. Now finish strong.

  • Day 1: Make the bed. Unpack the essentials bag. Locate the coffee maker. Order pizza.
  • Day 2: Set up internet (if they installed earlier in the week, test it now). Unpack kitchen and bathroom.
  • Day 3–5: Unpack clothes, set up living room. Hang curtains and blackout shades (Houston sun is relentless).
  • Week 1: File the lease-turnover paperwork with your old landlord. Follow up on deposit (Texas law: 30 days to return).
  • Week 2: Mail-in voter registration card. Update emergency contacts. Drop off Goodwill donations.
  • Review the movers. Google review. 2 minutes. Matters more than you think to small businesses.
Compressed timeline

Don’t have 8 weeks? Here’s the 7-day version.

Need to move in 7 days or less? The timeline collapses but most of it still works:

  • Day 1 (now): Book movers. Same-day available if you’re really tight.
  • Days 2–3: Purge ruthlessly. Pack storage rooms.
  • Days 4–5: Utility transfers. Change of address.
  • Day 6: Pack everything except essentials.
  • Day 7 (move day): Execute.

§09 FAQ

Frequently asked.

When should I book movers in Houston?
4 weeks out for peak season (May–August, last weekend of any month) and 2 weeks out for off-peak. Same-day booking is possible with KAK for most Houston zips — crew dispatched within 2 hours.
What utilities do I need to transfer in Houston?
Electricity (deregulated — pick your retail provider: Reliant, TXU, Gexa, Green Mountain, etc.), water (City of Houston or Harris County MUD), gas (CenterPoint), internet (Xfinity, AT&T Fiber, Verizon), and trash if you’re not in a managed complex.
Do I need a parking permit for the moving truck in Houston?
Usually no, if you’re in an apartment complex with a loading zone. Downtown, Midtown, and parts of Montrose sometimes require a temporary no-parking permit ($15–$30). Ask your apartment office 2 weeks out.
How long does a typical apartment move take?
Studio: 2–3 hours total. 1-BR: 3–4 hours. 2-BR: 3–5 hours. Add 30–60 minutes if you’re moving across town in traffic or have 2+ flights of stairs.
What’s the #1 mistake people make when moving in Houston?
Not defrosting the fridge the day before. Close second: not purging before packing — you end up paying to move a bunch of stuff you’ll donate next month anyway.
Can I do this checklist for a last-minute move?
Yes — compress it to 7 days. The 6-week and 8-week items become ‘do it now.’ See our lease-end and same-day guides for tight-window tactics. The essential bag, defrosted fridge, and photo documentation steps still matter.
Do you provide a physical printable checklist?
The on-page checklist is print-friendly as-is. Hit Ctrl+P / Cmd+P and it formats to 2 pages. Or screenshot the summary box at the top for phone reference on move day.
